Over the last month, I’ve been thinking a lot about letting things go. It’s a new year and part of my intention setting process for 2018 is thinking about what I’m moving on from from 2017. It’s also a message that I hear in yoga classes all the time, and it’s a great message, but there’s something else that goes with it that I think we often miss that potentially could make the letting go stickier, stronger, more long-lasting.
Say you’re letting go of a bad habit, (ex: drinking too much, spending too much money) what are you taking on that’s driving the “letting go” decision (ex: health, financial stability)? Let’s face it, you don’t really let something go just once, you let it go hundreds of times, thousands of times, you do it over and over again and in-so-doing you choose something else to take on. Independence. Happiness. Mental Health. Sobriety. Saving for something big in your life. Career. Acknowledge and draw awareness to what you’re choosing over and over again.
Be bold. Be courageous. Be intentional about what you’re letting go of and choose something that’s so important to you that you aren’t tempted to let that other thing back in your life.
I’m focusing on a couple things this year, the biggest is that I’m letting go of self-doubt and trusting myself. I literally say the words to myself “I trust myself. I am on the right path.” multiple times per day when the doubt starts to build. I feel doubt rise up, the negative, self-defeating thought processes, then I coach myself through it. “I am not weak, I am strong, smart and capable and I trust myself. I am on the right path.” Somedays I fail. Sometimes I do really well. It’s a practice and it is worth doing.
I’m also letting go of some unhealthy habits (not going to dive in on each of them) and I’m choosing health, both mental and physical.
There are others, but those are the big ones for me that I am ready to share.
What are you letting go of this year? What are you taking on in its place?
